Supplements are not a foreign concept to us. There are countless vitamins, minerals, proteins, amino acids, antioxidants, etc., and even more brands that can provide us with them.
As a holistic nutritionist, I always recommend getting the majority of your nutrients from food, however that's not always possible as our schedules fluctuate, travel happens and meal prepping isn't always an option. As the seasons change and our bodies are exposed to pollution, germs, pollen and other harmful things that we can't control, it's in our best interest to prevent ourselves from getting sick. Whether that be doubling up on our daily dose of vitamin C or trying to reduce our stress levels (yeah right, NYC), taking precautions- especially this time of the year- is crucial.
When I was first introduced to vitamin IV drips, I was skeptical. First of all, needles and I absolutely DO NOT mix. To this day, I need to hold someone hand when getting blood drawn at the doctors. When I fist walked into Studio Med, the first thing I noticed was how clean and white their facility was. Their team (Konrad and Olivia) made me feel very comfortable and explained the entire process to me- including what was going into my IV drip, the benefits, timing and had a very detailed response to all of my annoying questions! :)
For an infusion, vitamins are added to a solution containing the same salt concentration as your blood to aid absorption and take about 15 to 45 minutes- depending on how quickly your body takes the nutrients. The infusion is painless and I would say the worst part is actually thinking about the needle- If I can do it, anyone can! While the infusion is happening, you're relaxing in a private white room in a very comfortable chair with the option do just relax or catch up on emails.
A few common symptoms and conditions that can be treated with the vitamin IV drip are:
Why Vitamin IV?
Many of us cannot adequately absorb nutrients from the gastrointestinal tract. If you have symptoms such as chronic constipation and bloating, abdominal pain or diarrhea- then you most likely have an ongoing cycle of malabsorption which could be causing other illnesses such as autoimmune disease, eczema, depression, etc.
Compared to consuming whole foods and oral supplements, IV therapy allows amino acids, vitamins, and minerals to be readily available much quicker by bypassing our digestive system. This is not to say that whole foods aren't the best option, but the IV treatment can definitely assist with a few nutrients lacking in your diet.
In my opinion, vitamin IV treatments are a great option for those of us who live a stressful lifestyle and may need a little bit of a boost (especially when sleep or a clean diet aren't a priority). Some of the infusions can even help tackle a cold when you just don't have time for a sick day or when you feel that your body needs a little extra hydration. After my treatment (and a very hectic week), my body felt extremely hydrated and I felt a boost of energy and clarity immediately after leaving the facility.
The Price Point: `
You won't find your average saline bag with a designer price point at Studio Med. All of their IV drips are infused with beneficial vitamins and minerals custom to your needs.
The drips range from $160 to $290 depending on the package and the amount of supplements within it. I personally tried the vitamin complex treatment which is priced at $200.
Studio Med is offering a generous 20% discount to anyone interested in trying out their vitamin IV therapy, bringing the least expensive drip down to $128. Just mention that you read about their practice on my blog :) They also do house calls, so there is no need to leave your apartment and they travel as far as the Hamptons and even central Jersey!
